PS2 (SLPS-25172) complete
Latest release: QS v1.3.4. The whole game is English: every story scene, all 608 timed skits (retranslated at full length in v1.3.0, with each line's text speed set to fit its voice), menus, battle text, subtitles for the spoken battle lines, world map, titles, Quiz Book, enemy artes, boss lines, the movies with dialogue and the ending staff roll.
Known limits: text drawn into pictures (cooking recipe names, a poster in the Katz Village) stays Japanese, the enchant level up message is shortened because the game cuts it at about 32 characters, and about 766 dialogue records show their fifth line alone on a second page.
New in v1.3.4: dreck's final font (clearer letters such as s and t, a smaller asterisk), with apostrophes and double quotes that look different (before, every double quote showed as a single quote); the last Japanese enemy arte names (Poihan of the colosseum ghost "Death", Whirl, Quake, Cancer Scissor) and Mystic Arte banners (the Sky Rip chain, Holy Mercy, Penitence) are English; the packed second copies of the menu files that some screens read are translated too (Refine shows "Lens A:0 B:0/100"); the "Highest meadow in the misty land" poem and the piano line no longer start with an empty line.
New in v1.3.3: fixed the freeze at the start of some boss fights (Elrane, Rimul) that came with the battle subtitles of v1.3.2, and speaker names for the Elrane and Fortuna lines and for victory exchanges between two characters.
New in v1.3.2: English subtitles for the spoken battle lines (victory quotes, incantations, special arte and Mystic Arte phrases, the leader's orders, scripted fight hints and boss lines) above the HP bars, with the speaker's name in front; the boss and scripted fights are not checked in game yet, reports welcome. The Skit Hut replay menu no longer gets stuck on a long skit title.
New in v1.3.1: every skit line finishes before the next speaker starts (30 skit lines shortened for that), the Skit Hut replay menu no longer sticks, the Refine screen shows the Lens counts as "A:1 B:0/ 99", the last party cut-in lines and Mystic Arte banner are English, and the patched disc has the retail disc structure (v1.3.0 showed as a blue disc on a PS3; a PS3 test of v1.3.1 is still owed). For v1.3.0 run python ps2\menu\fix_disc_layout.py fix "your patched.iso" from a copy of the repository on your patched ISO before burning.
PSP (ULJS-00097) playable
Latest release: PSP patch v0.3.6. Story, all 608 timed skits at full length with per line text speed, almost all menus, items, artes, titles, descriptions, the Quiz Book, battle enemy names, battle subtitles, the movies with dialogue and the PSP staff roll are English. New in v0.3.6: the crash when the game goes back to the world map in the final era is fixed (reported on a PS Vita, error C1-2858-3: the final era map had grown past the buffer the game loads it into), the enemy arte banners that were still Japanese (Regeneration, Barbatos' Blaze, the enemy Judas' Glare, Moonfall and Dragonfang) and the names Death and Thanatos Knight are English, and the noise block in the Aqua Labyrinth choice is gone. New in v0.3.5: the freeze when leaving the Atamoni Ovum is fixed, the full PS2 arte and spell names with their spaces, English Mystic Arte and Added Arte banners, "Rune Axe" style refined names, "Pickaxe", normal digits in dialogue, and smaller battle subtitles with speaker names. New in v0.3.4: the crash when an item or arte is used from the menu is fixed (for example Loni's Heal outside of battle), and the spoken battle lines have English subtitles as on PS2. New in v0.3.3: the button legends of all menus, chest and pickup messages, the shop, town exit, cooking and recipe dialogs, the save screen and Memory Stick dialogs, element labels, weapon and monster classes, Battle Memos that fit their box, an English XMB background picture with the patch version, the full title screen label, and movies encoded like the original ones for the PSP's hardware decoder. New in v0.3.2: one English typeface (Fira Sans) for dialogue, skits and menus with every letter its own width, lowercase in the bold menu text ("Kyle", "Normal"), the world map in English in all five eras (location names, signposts, the box puzzle, Kyle's ending monologue), about 100 more menu strings (all shop names, scene titles), Frostheim in the PSP only menus and the enemy name banner at the start of a battle.
Where it runs: PPSSPP on PC, Android (a development build, v1.20.4 or newer) and Switch, and the PSP emulator of a PS3. A PS Vita with Adrenaline 8.0.2 played v0.3.3 without crashes in menus, battles, towns and on the world map; the crash when using an item or arte from the menu is fixed in v0.3.4, the final era world map crash in v0.3.6. Real PSP: a tester reports that a PSP-2000 (ME firmware) and a PSP-3000 (PRO firmware) start and play the patch, on PRO with the "Memory Stick Speedup" option turned off for games; the white screen the PSP-3000 showed with v0.3.2 most likely came from that option. Reports with the patch version are welcome.
Still Japanese: the status ailment icons in the Monster Book, two single labels with no context yet, the save title of saves made before v0.3.3 and the recipe names of saves from the Japanese game or an older patch (both are stored in the save), and the kana keyboard (on purpose).
How to play
- Download the patch from the releases page. PS2 and PSP are separate patches (PSP tags start with
PSP_). - You need your own dump of the Japanese game: SLPS-25172 for PS2, ULJS-00097 for PSP. Apply the xdelta patch to your ISO with Delta Patcher (original ISO in, patch in, Apply).
- Play the PS2 version on PCSX2, a real PS2 or a PS3 (see the PS3 note above), the PSP version on PPSSPP, a PS Vita with Adrenaline or a PSP with custom firmware (on PRO firmware turn "Memory Stick Speedup" off for games).
New to the game? Read the English manual (controls, menus, battle system, characters) or get it as a PDF.
How to help
- Report what is wrong. Open an issue or post in the forum thread with: PS2 or PSP, the patch version shown on the title screen, emulator or hardware, a screenshot, and where it happens. Japanese text, cut-off lines, wrong names, freezes and typos all count.
- Playtest. A full playthrough with screenshots and suggested fixes finds what scans cannot. The PSP version needs this most.
- Improve the text. Corrections to the script are pull requests on the repository; the README explains the text rules.
- Draw. Latin fonts for both versions (both font tools take a PNG sheet), and English versions of textures that still show Japanese.
- Reverse engineering. Open PSP problems: menu strings whose address the game builds in code where a pair cannot be redirected safely, which shortened arte names fit the grid again with the variable width font, a look at the Monster Book screen (its names are probably English now), and reports from real PSPs (patch version, firmware and its options, and for a crash the crash address). Details in the README; formats and offsets in TECHNICAL.md.
Tools
- Hex to Japanese: decode the game's text bytes
- Japanese to Hex: encode text for the game
- The archive tools, menu and text patchers, the one-command PSP build and the audit live in the repository; its README explains how to build both patches from source.
